  • I retired from the US Army in 1995 and was spiritually broken.I searched for a good church that would fulfill my spiritual needs. I found all of this in FAC.Now I grew up attending a small Christian church in Southern Illinois, then joined the Army. Attending FAC I eventually had a few one on one meetings for Marty to help heal me spiritually. I rededicated my life at the church. In 2007 my wife passed from NonHodgkins lymphoma. In 2008 I left SJ to return to my birth place in Illinois. In 2012 I answered the Lord's call to ministry. After much intensive studying. I was ordained to become a Pastoral Care Minister who has sat with many Hospice Care patients to be with them as they pass from this world to go Home to the Lord. I OWE MARTY for saving my spiritual life and setting me on a course of life where I would eventually accept the Lord's call.I am now returning to South Jersey after fourteen years to be close to friends and family. I'm now 100% Disabled by the VA, but I'll find out what happens next. Marty, I know you are retired now but I still thank you for everything. God Bless

Choosing a church may be one of the most personal and important decisions an individual or a family will make. I wish I had known what I am going to share in my rating of Fellowship Alliance Chapel (FAC)...my family and many of my friends have had to learn some painful truths about this church's leadership the hard way. I hope what I share will illuminate some hidden truths about FAC for you, and I hope these truths help you choose before you invest your time and your heart.

EQUALITY: There are many wonderful churches in this area. Fellowship Alliance Chapel may not be a good choice for you if you value equality. Though senior pastor Marty Berglund hides his strict and unwavering "policy" that "Women cannot preach" and "Women cannot teach men" and "Women cannot serve Communion or serve as an Usher", it is a policy that is woven throughout church leadership, causing a dysfunctional disservice to the truth of God's creation of balance and equality.

The word that FAC leadership uses to defend their position that women cannot preach, or teach men, or lead groups with men in them, or serve as an usher is "Complementarianism", which is a manmade VIEWPOINT, not at all a Biblical one. Complementarianism believes women should be restricted in church leadership roles and instead calls women to serve in equally important complementary roles...AKA "Women do not qualify to lead". FAC leadership is aware of how unpopular this viewpoint is, so they hide this policy (it is not written anywhere in their website). When I asked why, if they think it is the right viewpoint, do they not publicize it, the answer was "We don't want people to know about that at first, because many people won't want to come to this church."

So, like myself and many others, we didn't know about this ridiculous and sexually bias policy until we had been going to church at FAC for awhile. What concerns me most is that the male leadership doesn't lead, it dominates, and there is no value placed on the wisdom and talents of women to teach and inspire men...they are allowed to teach other women, but never allowed to teach men.

OPENNESS & HONESTY: If you value church transparency, Fellowship Alliance Chapel is probably not a good choice for you. Church leadership has gone to great lengths to hide their spending, borrowing and waste of finances - it is alarming for those who have asked to see the itemized financial records from the FAC "elder board", only to be patronized and deflected. Currently FAC leadership is building an extravagant expansion, and they have put the church, which was debt free only a few years ago, into huge debt. They have "managed" the information they give to the congregation about the building project, and with great calculation, limiting the "details" so they can continue to squeeze pledges and donations (money, free labor, supplies and other support), manipulating the generosity of the church family to build a building they did not need, and spending huge money on extravagant items like a video wall that costs over $100,000.00.

There is a sign out by the road of FAC that says, "WE ARE MAKING ROOM FOR YOU."

Sounds good, right? But, that sign should come with a disclaimer that I will add here:

"We Are Making Room For You" BUT... IF you fall within the following categories, you'll need to change:

    LGBTQ

A woman who believes she should be equally considered for all the roles within the church

A man who believes a woman should be equally considered for all roles within the church

Someone who values transparency, accountability, freedom, and introspective honesty from the leadership level

Someone who desires to be accepted and embraced EXACTLY as you are

Someone who believes that the BIG church mindset is, well, moving in the wrong direction of the personal intimacy and commitment that Jesus exemplifies, and someone who values real relationship over shallow extravagance

If you are seeking a church, you deserve a church who's leadership is accountable, in an environment that values you just as you are...FAC is not for you.

  • We love FAC & can not wait to move into the new building that God moved mountains to build.

  • Hmm, I've just read "Caring Congregant" views of this church which I have attended for just over a year. I believe in the views of this church and the bible that does speak about Men leading and that women should not be leading Men in this manner. Society has really gotten away from the values of the bible and like a lot of your views have suggested, become more like the "world". We are not to conform to the world but rather, conform more to God's word. We are not to condemn those that don't believe the way we do but rather, allow the spirit to convict those and maybe even you. This is not to argue your views as you have a right to them. Each person has so many choices of churches they want to attend and that is what you have done. Growth in a church means Gods word is growing too. This church has three services to accommodate those who work different shifts and jobs. I am very thankful of a Saturday night service. With all of the programs that this church offers, you may want to look into ALPHA to get some of your concerns addressed as well. To each their own. God will lead you to where your spirit needs to go and maybe, this church was not your path.

I pray that my leadership in this church is doing what is right by God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  • Between the service and the band playing, the best services I've been to.

  • As a military family, I sometimes dread the church-hunting experience... but FAC is HOME and has been HOME since the beginning of our PCS here! The key is to get plugged in to a SMALL GROUP (aka mini church), find a place to SERVE (ie. usher, nursery, worship team, greeting team, etc.), and learn to be part of the FAMILY! Jesus is lifted high in this place, and I love being a part of what He's doing in South Jersey. Come check it out - you won't regret it!
